Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens, both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked the class at Irvington High School. Latifahs parents split up after Latifah, then ten years aged, was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah, which means tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable athlete at high school. She sang the song Home from the show The Wiz in a high school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah became part of with the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of an MC team and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. Her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
